Antidote to Fear is Love

In the wide array of vibrational frequencies we express everyday, there are basically two emotive movements: expansion and contraction. These two opposite directions of emotional intensity are based on two primary emotions: love and fear. Love expands the heart while fear contracts it. These two opposite emotive movements, in varying degrees of intensity, colour our perception of life and influence every interaction we have with our environment. By understanding these two divergent responses, we can start to comprehend their repercussions on our life and also transform our symbiotic relationship with the universe.

Fear Arises from a Sense of Separation

Fear arises from a sense of separation, a feeling of alienation or isolation from our environment. We fear the unknown, be it people, places or things. There may be fear of the future which in turn arouses worry, doubt and inner conflicts about which direction to take in life. There may be fear of danger from an imagined hostile force. Fear creates rigidity and triggers hormonal changes associated with the “fight or flight” response. Muscles may tighten, blood pressure may rise and the heartrate may increase. When we are gripped by fear, we spontaneously create barriers between ourselves and our environment. These self-created barriers create more divisions, closure and an inability to flow in harmony with the wholeness of life. Fear may be expressed as anxiety, depression, lack of motivation, low self-worth or recurrent negative thoughts. In the state of fear, there is contraction mentally, emotionally, physically and energetically.

Fear Attracts Fear

Fear results from an over-identification with the outer material field of diversity. When the attention is absorbed in the material, ever-fluctuating outer realm of life, one has a tendency to get overshadowed by feelings of uncertainty and insecurity. The outer field of life is always changing; it is unreliable. A feeling of insecurity in the face of change may generate fear. But in reality, the fear is only caused by the mind. The mind which is caught in the whirlpool of change is the enemy. Fear attracts fear. Whatever we put our attention on grows stronger in our lives. When the mind is not open to the inner, transcendental wholeness of life, it can easily become a victim of fear. By focussing on the narrow, artificial boundaries between ourselves and the environment, life becomes closed to its unbounded inner magnitude and magnificence.

Fear-based Administration

In an administration based on fear and martial law, outbreaks of violence always loom on the horizon. Fear results in anti-social behaviour.  Fear contracts one’s cognitive functions and restricts one’s judgment. When the mind is weak, fear, distrust and insecurity cloud one’s decision-making ability. In such situations, it is impossible to create a lasting state of peace in society.

Love Expands our Awareness

Love expands our awareness and opens the heart. Love is unifying. It has the ability to unify the divergent threads of life into an interwoven pattern of joy-filled wholeness. When we are in love with life, we can welcome the future with open arms. The impulse of love nourishes every layer of our senses, mind, intellect and ego. The emotion of love in whatever form it takes strengthens the immune system. Love is the expression of inner confidence and trust in a higher power that is leading our life forward in an evolutionary direction. The emotion of love is based on an inner feeling that whatever is happening in our life is happening for the best. We trust the universe to bestow on us whatever we need at the right time. Even though we may not always understand the “why” of every experience, we accept all experiences as stepping stones on our evolutionary path. Love is the invisible balm which soothes our muscles and calms the turbulence of the mind. It bestows an inner stillness, an unshakable faith, a deep anchor for the ship of life. Although the waves may toss the ship hither and thither, love keeps the ship afloat. The impulse of love brings softness, fluidity and flexibility in our inter-relationship with the universe. Love develops more sensitivity, compassion and empathy in our relationships. When the heart is full of love, our inter-relationships are more cordial, intimate and enriching. Appreciation deepens when love is shared. The expanded quality of love produces emotions of happiness, enthusiasm, laughter, peacefulness and calmness.

The ideal of universal brotherhood can only blossom in the garden of love. Love arises from a heart where the inner truth that we are all one, exists. Love is the ultimate unifier, capable of bridging the gap between people, nations and the family of nations. Only love has the ability to create a lasting state of peace on earth.
